Okay, this is incredibly important: don’t focus all your attention on your social media outlets at the expense of your website.  Instead, think of social media as a funnel that can lead people to your website, where they’ll hopefully convert into customers.  Your auto dealership website is your chance to make a significant and lasting impression on your potential customers, so make sure it’s in tip-top shape before you invest your time in any other kind of internet marketing initiatives, like social media. 

DO pick the right social networks for your dealership.
Social media is not “one size fits all,” so don’t feel like you need to participate in a network that isn’t right for your business.  Take into account how much time you have to devote to social media and which networks your particular customer base might be more drawn to.  Maybe it’s just Facebook.  Or maybe it’s Twitter and Instagram.  Whichever networks you choose, just make sure they feel right for your dealership.   

DON’T update every once in a while.
Social networking demands regular engagement in order to be successful.  Since the internet is open 24/7, people have the opportunity to comment on your pages anytime they want.  Therefore, it’s important to monitor your feeds often so that you can respond to comments in a timely manner.  If you neglect to do so, then your network will lose its effectiveness and only serve as a dead-end for people’s interactions with your business. 

DO post excellent images.
A photo can make any post more dynamic and appealing, which can increase the likelihood that people will stop to read what you write.  On Facebook, for instance, people often scroll quickly through posts and only stop on the ones that catch their eye.  Get your posts noticed!

DON’T post irrelevant information.
Instead of posting random information, focus on the automotive industry and any related topics that your social media followers might be interested in.  They’re not following you for your comedic skills or social opinions—there are plenty of other personalities out there for people to follow for that.  Share your automotive expertise, instead.
